About the Master

The European Master in Biological and Chemical Engineering for a Sustainable Bioeconomy  (Bioceb) is a two-year international Master’s degree programme delivered by a consortium of five European universities, including the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne (URCA) in France. The programme enables students to obtain a triple Master’s degree, awarded by three of the partner universities.

At URCA, the programme is supported by the Institut international en bioéconomie et environnement.
the programme provides students with multidisciplinary training in biotechnology, biological resources, bioprocess engineering and bio-based products. It combines scientific and technical knowledge with approaches related to sustainability, innovation and entrepreneurship, enabling students to understand and develop sustainable value chains from biomass to bio-based products.

Delivered entirely in English, the programme offers students an international learning experience through mobility across partner institutions. Students progressively build their own specialisation
according to their academic and professional interests, before completing a research
and development internship
and Master’s thesis.

Academic organisation

The Master’s degree in Biological and Chemical Engineering for a Sustainable Bioeconomy is organised over two years, for a total of 120 ECTS. The programme combines foundational multidisciplinary training in the first year with specialised training in the second year, and includes international mobility across the Bioceb partner universities.

  • Duration: 2 years
  • Credits: 120 ECTS
  • Language: English
  • Teaching: Full-time, with on-site classes at the partner universities
  • Master 1: Foundational and multidisciplinary training at the University of Reims Champagne-Ardenne (France), followed by training focused on sustainable value chains at AgroParisTech (France) or Tallinn University of Technology – TalTech (Estonia)
  • Master 2: Specialised training in Biomass Engineering at AgroParisTech, Bioprocesses at the University of Liège (Belgium), or Bio-based Products at Aalto University (Finland)
  • Semester 4: 30-ECTS research and development internship leading to the preparation and defence of the Master’s thesis

Programme content

The first semester provides a common foundation in the biological and chemical engineering principles underpinning the sustainable bioeconomy. Students develop knowledge of agro-resources, biomass valorisation and biorefinery processes.

The second semester focuses on the sustainability of bio-based value chains. Students develop cross-cutting skills and explore either the economic dimension of sustainable value chains at AgroParisTech or the principles of green chemistry at TalTech.

Students choose a specialised study path corresponding to one of three key biotechnology approaches:

  • Biomass Engineering – AgroParisTech
  • Bioprocesses – University of Liège
  • Bio-based Products – Aalto University

This semester enables students to develop advanced technical and scientific expertise in their chosen field.

The final semester is dedicated to a research and development internship. Students apply the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the programme in a professional or research environment and complete their Master’s thesis.

Additional information

Teaching format

The programme is delivered full-time and in English. Teaching takes place on the campuses of the partner universities according to the student’s mobility and specialisation pathway.

International mobility

International mobility is an integral part of the Bioceb programme. Students study at several partner universities in France, Belgium, Finland and Estonia, developing both academic expertise and intercultural skills.

Professional experience

A research and development internship is completed during the final semester. The internship is selected according to the student’s specialisation and professional objectives and provides an opportunity to apply the knowledge acquired throughout the programme in a professional or research environment.

Research and projects

The programme combines scientific training with research, innovation and project-based activities. Students develop skills in multidisciplinary research, innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as in teamwork, leadership and project management.

Admission

Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification corresponding to at least 180 ECTS in engineering or science, including at least one discipline related to biology.

Applicants must also demonstrate an English language level of at least B2. The programme is highly international and welcomes motivated students from around the world.

Detailed information regarding eligibility requirements, required documents and application deadlines is available on the official Bioceb website.

Further studies

Graduates may pursue a PhD in fields related to biotechnology, biological and chemical engineering, bio-based products, bioprocesses or the sustainable bioeconomy.
